Physical and electronic product development

For manufacturers and companies that want to bring a physical product and its technology to market. I lead the development, or we carry it out end to end with the Boneless Grills team; for each project we agree the team, the deliverables and the budget.

Where clients usually start

  1. 01You have a product and want to improve it or add technology to it.
  2. 02You have manufacturing capacity and want to develop a new line.
  3. 03You have an idea and need to turn it into a viable product.

What we develop

Electronics
The product’s electronics: boards, sensors, power and control.
Enclosure, buttons and look
The physical design: the enclosure, the controls, and how it looks and feels in use.
Firmware and software
The software that runs on the product and makes it work.
Interface
Screens, the app, and the way a person operates it.
Communications
How it connects to other devices and to the cloud.
Server and API
The backend and the API that the product and the app talk to.
Support and usage data
The technical-service back office and the usage data for warranties and statistics.
Development leadership
Requirements, suppliers, phases and budget, coordinating everyone through to production and launch.

Not everything is part of every engagement: depending on the project we work on every layer or only the missing ones, and we put it in writing before we start.

Real products

Developed by the team at Boneless Grills, the company I run. My role is to run the company and its product decisions.

How to engage

Product definition
USD 1,500 – 7,500
Fixed-scope engagements of 6 to 30 hours: from reviewing a product to a definition sprint with requirements, cost targets and a roadmap.
Development leadership
USD 3,000 – 7,500/month
12 to 30 hours a month: I lead your team and the suppliers through development, industrialisation and launch.
Full development
Quoted for the project
We develop the product with the Boneless Grills team, from the electronics to the backend, with a team, deliverables and a budget set for the project.

Amounts in USD. On their own, definition and leadership don’t include manufacturing, all of the engineering, certifications or full development, which is quoted for its scope.

Additional hours: USD 300/h, estimated and approved in advance. The exact scope is agreed in writing.

Technology as part of the product

Connected products are where I have the most hands-on experience: electronics, touch screens, apps, cloud services and IoT. I treat them as one part of the product, judged by what they do for the buyer and the business, never as a goal on their own.

For each project we define who takes part, what is delivered and on what budget. The goal is a product that works, not a report for someone else to carry out.

How we start

  1. 01A conversationYou tell me your situation and what you want to achieve. I tell you whether I can help and what the first step would be.
  2. 02Scope in writingI propose what we will do, what I will deliver and who takes part. We adjust it before you approve it.
  3. 03Agreed executionI work on what we agreed, with the specialists it needs, and we review progress at the agreed points.
